WHAT IS ELL/ESOL?
The acronym ELL stands for English Language Learners and the acronym ESOL stands for English to Speakers of Other Languages. According to the Glossary of Education Reform, English Language Learners are children and adult learners who cannot communicate fully using the English language. Scholastic activity for teachers
- One beneficial activity for all students and ESL students especially, that teachers can use to introduce new stories and vocabulary to students is to create a vocabulary bulletin board as a whole class. By creating the bulletin as a class students learn the meaning of words through their own interpretation, the actual definition, and visual aid of the word.
- Begin the activity by introducing the vocabulary for the new literature. Place the vocabulary words on the bulletin board.
- Ask students to make a prediction of what the definition of the vocabulary words may be. Place the students prediction of the definition on the board.
- Read the story as an entire class. After the reading as a class analyze the predictions on the board to see if the predictions were correct.
- Give students the correct definition of the word and also have them create a picture for the vocabulary word.
- Leave the bulletin board up for the remainder of the literature unit for students to see in the classroom.

Books for ell/esol STUDENTS
I Hate English by Ellen Levine tells a story of an English Language Learner that moves to the United States from Hong Kong. The student really dislikes learning English and finds it very difficult. Through the help of one important teacher the student learns to love the English language. The story also breaks down the steps to learning the English language for ELL students.
This is a great book to read for both English speaking students in the classroom and ELL students. Through this story English speakers can learn and understand the struggles of English Language Learners in school. English learners can also relate to the book and realize they are not alone in learning a second language.
